Political Abuse: Must Read.

From Matthew Gross's blog:
Listen as Donna and Nancy Pelosi and Senator Charles Schumer take to the airwaves saying that they have to go back to the drawing board and learn from their mistakes and try to be better, more likable, more appealing, have a stronger message, speak to morality. Surf the blogs, and read the comments of dismayed, discombobulated, confused individuals trying to figure out what they did wrong. Hear the cacophony of voices, crying out, "Why did they beat me?"

And then ask anyone who has ever worked in a domestic violence shelter if they have heard this before.

They will tell you, every single day.

The answer is quite simple. They beat us because they are abusers. We can call it hate. We can call it fear. We can say it is unfair. But we are looped into the cycle of violence, and we need to start calling the dominating side what they are: abusive. And we need to recognize that we are the victims of verbal, mental, and even, in the case of Iraq, physical violence.

As victims we can't stop asking ourselves what we did wrong.

This is so right.  We've got to stop being played like a violin by the liberal media.

All this talk about values and the religious vote or the hispanic vote is playing right into their hands!  We are playing the victim's role.  And all the discussion on this blog and others about what our message should be is completely beside the point. Why? Because we don't control the media, and THEY DO. It doesn't matter what nuanced words we use, when they go through the media filter, they will be twisted against us.
So forget about all this Lakoff stuff. It might become relevant once the media isn't controlled by the right wing noise machine. But until then, it is beside the point.

As long as they control the air waves, we will not be able to get out message out. So why worry about the fine points of our message?

The only time Kerry was able to get his message out unfiltered was during the debates--and his poll ratings soared. So what was wrong with his message? Nothing.

What was wrong was that the media war against him went on nonstop after the debates.

What we have to do is take action against the media. How do we do that? I don't know, but figuring that out is much more important than playing with words.

Victimization (none / 0)

I think we should be willing to stand up and take the conservatives on, and certainly, when we are faced with some of the media bullis like O'Reilly or Coulter we should not hesitate to go toe to toe.

On the whole though, I think we should avoid any representation of us as "victims" or as "victims of abuse" and conservatives as "victimizers". Like all theories of victimization it robs people of agency and responsibility.

Instead, lets take responsibility for letting them frame the debate and start reframing.

Of course there are cases in life when victimizers inflict real damage on victims and we should never let them get away with it. But the last thing we need to do is give the conservatives the excuse to go after us (again!) about playing the naive, innocent victim role.

Re: Victimization (none / 0)

Wow, good point. I really agreed with the initial diary post, but I also agree with what you are saying. Perhaps the best take-home message would be to be aware of the right's tactics, and not allow ourselves to play victim, and work on reframing our message?
